Evolution seems to have occurred a million times faster than natural selection alone could explain. Could nature be using some hidden process? Just read Probably Approximately Correct by Leslie Valiant (a computational theorist). It explores a special class of algorithms which he calls 'ecorthims' that may prove to be the incredible tool used used by nature to be so ruthlessly efficient.

In doing so he describes the current state of computational theories of learning. In particular he covers the concept that he developed called 'probably approximately correct' that may explain how effective behaviours can be learnt in complex environments.
