This book is outstanding - brief, proudly retro, humorous, and genius. A great introduction to the last 60 years of AI. To know a subject so well that you can reduce it to a Ladybird-style book readable by all is a gift. We could all learn from this level of presentation.
It is available online as part of the reading list in the Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme I'm currently enrolled on.
Should you want to know the current state of machine learning and artificial intelligence then this is a good place to start. No maths but a great overview of some of the challenges facing those that have been building machines that think. There are links to the key literature in the field.
